Solar Eclipse 2021

We left the house this morning at 0455h to drive to a local outlook which is a popular spot to watch the sun rise. Thankfully the clouds of the last few days had cleared and the "ring of fire" solar eclipse could be seen from about 0540h to 0640h. We had solar glasses but the intensity of the sun at the horizon is low enough that there were about 8 minutes where we could watch without eye strain.

The series of pictures above was taken between 0536h and 0541h.

0546h

By 0546h the sun was too bright to take pictures without a filter, and eye protection was definitely necessary to look at the sun safely. We were the first people to arrive at the lookout and by this time there was quite a group, including families with school-aged children. The eclipse was over in our area by 0635h as the shadow of the moon moved away from the sun.

I watched the last solar eclipse on August 21, 2017 when I was at work. That eclipse occurred in the afternoon and it was only visible through protective lenses. I was able to get only one picture using the glasses over my camera lens. Each eclipse is unique in timing, seasonality and totality and it certainly was worthwhile to get up to watch today's solar event!

  1. You got amazing pictures of this one. it was heavy overcast here, and still is, so no sun.
