Winter arrived yesterday with our first snowfall and a sharp drop in temperature. It has been a warm year and last winter there was little snow even in snow belt areas near the Great Lakes in Ontario. Trees leafed out two weeks early this spring and the leaves on our Norway maples finally finished falling a couple of days ago. They usually drop completely in the first or second week of November. I rode my bike to work for the last time on November 26th and turned 1600 km for my total distance biked in 2024. This is well above the 1000 km average of the past four years because of the exceptionally long riding season.
I saw snow machines in full operation at a nearby ski hill today and people who earn a living running winter sports facilities are hoping for a good winter. Will there be a few weeks of skating on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa after two years of above-average temperatures? Winter is not my favourite season especially when there are ice storms, cloudy skies, damp fog, drizzly weather, short days and long nights. I want snow in December, January and February and perhaps to mid-March at the most.
The ice scraper is in the car, the wiper fluid is topped up and the snow tires are installed. Winter boots are out of the closet along with winter coats, gloves and hats. The bird feeder is ready for use once the snow is a little deeper.
